A Carbon Ads alternative for a brand that cannot book a million impressions a month

If you sell to developers or designers and can put the $5,000 a month that Carbon's home page calls a typical first buy behind it for a quarter, Carbon Ads is the network built for exactly that: one quiet unit on 350 and more sites those people already read, whitelisted by ad blockers, at a published CPM. Fill in the form.

If the budget is a few dollars and nobody is going to return your form, The Board lists a brand for a dollar, self-serve, this afternoon, on a public leaderboard ranked by what each listing paid, with the traffic counted by Fathom in the open.

The Board is ours, so read this with that in mind. Every listing on it is a paid placement, its position is decided by money and by nothing else, and nothing on it is editorial. The figures for Carbon Ads were read from its own pages on 6 September 2026 and are linked at the foot.

What Carbon Ads is, and what it costs

Carbon Ads is a curated native display network, founded in 2010 and operated by BuySellAds, that places one small ad unit on developer and designer sites: documentation, frameworks, tools and design galleries, 350 and more of them by its own count. It is not self-serve; the FAQ says so in as many words. A campaign starts with a Plan a Campaign form, Carbon selects both its publishers and its advertisers, and a booked campaign is served across the network against an audience rather than won at auction.

The price is a rate card, which is rarer than it should be. The web media kit, read 6 September 2026, lists $6 CPM for the Developer audience and $5 CPM for Creators, with up to 15% in added value for defined KPIs, analytics access or fresh creative, and a recommended minimum of a million impressions a month. A million at $5 is $5,000, and the home page says successful first-time advertisers typically start at $5,000 to $10,000 a month over 60 to 90 days. An older PDF kit still quotes $4.75 and $4; the web page is the current one. For contrast, the same site says publishers typically receive $1.20 to $2.30 per thousand.

Reach is Carbon's own figure: 250 million and more monthly impressions across 350 and more sites, 49 billion served since 2010, and a claimed click rate of 0.8% to 2.1% for the classic unit. Carbon counts served impressions only, which is the right way to count, and it is Carbon doing the counting. There are no Carbon-specific terms to read: carbonads.net/terms returned a 404 on 6 September 2026, and BuySellAds' terms and refund policy, neither of which carries a date, apply instead.

The price of a place, and the price of the top

Two prices matter: what it costs to be on the page at all, and what it costs to be the one everybody sees first. Drawn to scale, with The Board’s top spot read live from the board.

A log scale: every gridline is ten times the last, which is the only way a dollar and a five-figure sum fit on one line. Prices on the left are Carbon Ads’s as read on 6 September 2026; the top spot on The Board is $101 as this page was built and changes as the board does.

How The Board works, for somebody leaving Carbon Ads

No form and no reply to wait for. The Board is self-serve: a listing is a logo, a line and a link, it costs a dollar, and it is on the page the moment the card clears, at whatever rank a dollar buys on a board sorted by what each brand has paid. Nobody selects you and nobody selects the brands beside you; the terms say what may be listed and money says where.

There is no CPM because there are no impressions to book. You buy a position, hold it until somebody pays more, and the listing shows its own impressions and clicks as they happen, with the page's own traffic on a public Fathom dashboard. Rank 01 is a dollar over the holder and every amount is public, so the price of every position is read rather than quoted. Thirty days at the top wins the season; the standings freeze on a permanent page and the amounts reset.

Where Carbon Ads falls short, and where it wins

Falls short
  • The smallest buy is a million impressions, which is $5,000 at the creator rate, and the home page puts a first campaign at $5,000 to $10,000 a month for two or three months.
  • It is invitation-only on both sides. You fill in a form and Carbon decides whether you are an advertiser it wants, on no published timetable.
  • There are no terms of its own to read, and the ones that apply carry no date and make refunds discretionary, as credit.
Wins
  • The audience is exactly the one a developer tool wants, on sites those people read every working day, and the unit is small enough that they do not block it.
  • A published rate card. Carbon says what a thousand impressions cost before you ask, which almost nobody else on this shelf does.
  • It counts served impressions only and has done this since 2010; a network that has paid publishers $120 million by its own count is not going anywhere next month.

Which to pick

Pick Carbon Ads if
  • You sell to developers or designers and can fund $5,000 a month for a quarter.
  • You want a quiet native unit on documentation sites rather than a position on a leaderboard.
  • You have the patience for a form, a sales conversation and a two-month test.
Pick The Board if
  • The budget is a dollar, and you want to be on a page today without applying.
  • You want to choose your own position and know what every position above you costs.
  • You want the reach counted by somebody who is not also selling the impressions.

Claim a spot from $1

A listing is a logo, a line and a link. Rank 01 costs $1 more than whoever holds it, every amount on the page is public, and the traffic is on a Fathom dashboard anyone can open.

Questions people ask about a Carbon Ads alternative

How much does Carbon Ads cost?
Carbon's web media kit, read 6 September 2026, lists $6 CPM for its Developer audience and $5 CPM for Creators, with up to 15% added value for defined KPIs, analytics access or refreshed creative, and recommends a minimum of a million impressions a month. That is $5,000 a month at the creator rate, and the home page says first-time advertisers typically start at $5,000 to $10,000 a month over 60 to 90 days. There is no self-serve buy at any price.
Is Carbon Ads self-serve?
No. Carbon's FAQ says it does not currently offer self-serve buying; a campaign starts with a Plan a Campaign form on carbonads.net or a message to BuySellAds' sales team, and Carbon says it selects both publishers and advertisers to keep the network's quality. Publishers are reviewed in five to seven business days; no timetable is published for advertisers.
What is the cheapest alternative to Carbon Ads?
A Google Business Profile is free, though it reaches nobody by their job. Meta runs an awareness campaign from $1 a day. The Board lists a brand for $1, once, self-serve, on a public leaderboard. None of the three puts a unit on documentation sites, which is what Carbon's $5,000 a month buys, so cheapest depends on whether that audience is the point.
Is The Board a Carbon Ads alternative?
For a brand that cannot book a million impressions a month, or does not want to apply, yes, and it is a different thing. Carbon places a native unit across hundreds of developer sites at a CPM; The Board is one public page of brands ranked by what each listing paid, a dollar to join, with the traffic counted by Fathom and published. Every listing is a paid placement and the page says so.
What does The Board cost compared to Carbon Ads?
A listing on The Board is $1, paid once; rank 01 costs $1 more than the holder paid, every amount is public, and nothing bills again. Carbon is $5 to $6 per thousand impressions on its media kit, with a million a month recommended, which is $5,000 a month at the lower rate before any discount.
Does Carbon Ads offer refunds?
Carbon has no terms of its own online; carbonads.net/terms returned a 404 on 6 September 2026, and BuySellAds' policies apply. Those say nothing obliges BuySellAds to grant a refund, that one is considered at its reasonable discretion, and that a refund, if granted, is credit to the account for future purchases rather than money back. Neither document carries a date. The Board's payments are final, and its terms say so before you pay.
What happens when somebody outbids me?
Your listing moves down one place and the amount you paid stays where it was; a paid amount never goes down. You are told once who passed you and what taking the place back would cost, and you can add any whole-dollar amount or leave it. There is no campaign to pause and nothing running while you decide.
Can other brands damage my listing?
Yes, for a few hours at a time. Anybody can buy one of four kinds of sabotage against a listing, which changes how it looks or whether its link works, never what it paid or its real rank. It wears off on its own, it can be cleared early or protected against ahead of time, and nobody is told who attacked whom. Backing a listing is public; sabotage is not.
Do I get a backlink from The Board?
Not one to buy the listing for. Outbound links on the board go through a counted redirect, and the embeddable badge carries rel=sponsored, which is what a paid placement has to do. The dollar buys the people who see the listing and click it, and both counts are on the listing.
