CPC calculator
Cost per click is spend divided by clicks. Type any two of spend, clicks and CPC and the third is filled in as you type.
Under it: the formula, worked examples, where a cost per click usually lands by channel, how CPC follows from CPM and click rate, how to bring one down, and what a click costs on a leaderboard where the price of every position is public.
Every visit cost $1.25. A hundred visits is $125.00.
Where a cost per click usually lands by channel. Rules of thumb, wide on purpose.
What cost per click is
Cost per click is what one visit to your site cost you, on average, across a campaign. It is the metric of any channel where the click is the product: search, where somebody typed a need and you paid to be the answer, and most social and display buying once it is judged by the traffic it sent rather than by the showings it made.
It is also the number that reconciles. Impressions are the platform's count of its own work; clicks arrive on your site, in your analytics, under a source you can name, and the two counts should agree to within a reasonable discrepancy. A CPC you cannot find in your own traffic is a CPC to question.
The CPC formula
CPC = total spend / clicks.
- Clicks = spend / CPC. What a budget buys at a known rate.
- Spend = clicks x CPC. What a target number of visits will cost.
And the link to the other two metrics on this site: CPC = CPM / (click rate x 10). A $10 CPM at a 1% click rate delivers ten clicks per thousand impressions, so each click is $1. Raise the click rate to 2% and the same CPM buys clicks at fifty cents.
Worked examples
| Spend | Clicks | CPC | How it reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | 320 | $3.13 | Search, in a competitive category |
| $500 | 410 | $1.22 | A social campaign in its usual range |
| $300 | 450 | $0.67 | Display, where clicks are cheap and often accidental |
| $2,000 | 180 | $11.11 | LinkedIn, where the click is expensive and the visitor is specific |
| $250 | 2,500 | $0.10 | Remnant inventory, with a bounce rate to match |
The cheapest click on this table is the worst one. A dime buys a visit from somebody who probably tapped by mistake; eleven dollars buys a visit from the job title you asked for. Cost per click is only worth reading beside what the clicks did next.
CPC benchmarks by channel
Where most reports on paid media put the average cost per click for 2025 and 2026. Wide bands, because the spread inside a channel is wider than the gap between channels: an insurance keyword and a recipe keyword on the same search engine differ by a factor of fifty.
| Channel | Typical CPC | Why it sits there |
|---|---|---|
| Display | $0.40 to $1.20 | Clicks are cheap because attention is low and many are accidental |
| Facebook and Instagram | $0.60 to $2.00 | Feed placements with fine targeting; rises in the fourth quarter |
| Google Search | $1.50 to $5.00 | Intent is highest and the auction prices it; legal, finance and insurance run far above |
| $5.00 to $11.00 | A small professional audience priced for the job title |
The calculator places your CPC against these bands. A figure well above the band for its channel usually means a narrow audience, a competitive keyword or a creative with a low click rate, since on an auction a low click rate raises the price of each click you do get.
CPC or CPM: which to buy on
Some platforms let you choose whether to pay per click or per thousand impressions. The right answer follows from your own click rate.
- If your click rate is above the channel's average, buy on CPM: you get more clicks per thousand than the CPM price assumed, so each is cheaper than the CPC option.
- If it is below, buy on CPC: you pay only for the clicks you get, and the platform carries the cost of the impressions that did nothing.
- If the job is being seen rather than being clicked, buy on CPM whatever the click rate, and read the CPM calculator instead.
How to lower a cost per click
- Raise the click rate. On every auction a placement that gets clicked more is charged less per click, because the platform earns more from showing it.
- Match the page to the click. Search platforms score the landing page, and a page that answers the query lowers the price of the click that led to it.
- Add negatives. On search, the cheapest click is the one you did not buy from somebody looking for something else.
- Buy a position at a fixed price. A placement that costs the same whether or not a competitor arrives cannot inflate. On The Board a position costs a dollar more than the brand below it paid, and every click from it is counted on the listing.
What a click costs on The Board
The panel under the calculator places your spend on the board live and shows the brand holding that position today with the impressions and clicks it has earned. Divide the amount by the clicks and you have the cost per click of that position so far, from a real count rather than a forecast.
Every outbound click from a listing goes through the board's own redirect, so it is counted here, and it fires an event in Fathom under the brand's name, so it is counted somewhere that is not here. A cost per click you can check in two places is the only kind worth quoting.
